Field Research Assistant in Savanna Plant-Plant Interactions
The Coverdale Lab (coverdalelab.weebly.com) at the University of Notre Dame is recruiting an enthusiastic, creative, and motivated research assistant to assist with ecological fieldwork at Mpala Research Centre (Laikipia) from May-August 2025. The successful applicant will join a research team investigating plant-plant interactions (namely between trees and understory plants) in savannas, and their implications for savanna resilience to drought. More information about the research themes of the Coverdale Lab can be found here. The position requires 5.5 days of fieldwork each week (Monday-Friday and a half day Saturday). Typical work includes assisting with vegetation surveys, setting up and monitoring field experiments, running environmental sensors, and extensive data collection and entry. There are multiple avenues for the successful applicant to learn field and technological skills and techniques that can be relevant to future careers in science, research, data analysis, and/or conservation. Room and board at Mpala Research Centre for the duration of the position will be provided, along with a competitive stipend.

Qualifications:
- Position is open to current undergraduate students, recent college graduates, and to Master’s students in Kenya.
- Previous fieldwork or research experience is preferred but not required.
- Previous coursework in ecology or environmental science is preferred but not required.
- Previous experience with data collection and data entry.
- Enthusiasm for the outdoors and an eagerness to learn.
- Willingness to spend long days in remote and challenging field conditions.
- Ability to carry out physically demanding fieldwork over multiple weeks is required.
Start and End Dates: 20th May and end in early August 2025. Exact end dates can change to accommodate student’s academic calendars.
